What is a Vision Board & Why Is It So Important?

A vision board is a collage of images and words that represent your ideal life/ results/ overall feelings and emotions you want to have. It’s a way to intentionally choose how you’d like to live your life and present yourself in this world.

Instead of letting life just happen, you can choose to deliberately think, believe, and take actions to craft the life you really want to live. This is the power of visualizing and manifesting your thoughts into reality.

Instead of letting life happen TO you, you can choose to let it happen FOR you.

Vision Planning vs. Goal Setting

In order to achieve results, you would need to be clear about BOTH your visions and goals.

Vision planning helps you create the overall big picture of your ideal life. This includes how you’d like to feel about yourself, how other people will remember you, what your life looks like, and any principles that you want to live by.

Goal setting is about setting actionable steps that lead to the results you want to achieve.

For example, your long term vision may be to have your own business, travel the world as you work, and feeling fulfilled and confident. One goal to set for this vision may be to start a side hustle while staying in your current job and earn $3000/ month from this business by the end of this year.

Ultimately, being clear about your long term vision will motivate you to set and achieve the RIGHT goals.

STEP 1: HAVE CLARITY

Before even starting your board, it’s crucial to first set intentions and develop clarity about what kind of life you’re really looking for. Here are some questions to help get you started:

  • When I am living my ideal life, I want to feel…
  • I want to learn more of…
  • A day in my life looks like…
  • My definition of success is…
  • I feel like myself when…

Really spend some time and jot down your answers with as much detail as possible. The more specific you are about what kind of life you really want, the easier it will be for you to set goals and take actions to achieve them.

Remember, you are creating a life FOR YOU.

No, not what you think the society wants you to do, or what your parents and friends expect you to do. If you simply want to live by the beach with your dog and teach yoga as a job then CHOOSE THAT. You do not have to be the CEO of a company and earn lots of money to live your dream life.

STEP 2: CREATE A VISION BOARD

Get comfy with a cup of tea or wine, blast your favorite playlist, and just have fun and enjoy the beautiful process of dreaming up your life.

Choose the type of vision board that works best for you. You can create a physical board, digital board, or both! Get creative & be bold about your board! Remember, this board represents your best life possible. Don’t be afraid to dream big.

When your future is uncertain, it means anything is possible.

For physical boards, you can draw out pictures by hand, write out quotes, cut/ paste from magazines, or print out images from search engines.

When finding images, try to find pictures that show both the result AND evoke a positive emotion.

For example, a picture of a girl laughing naturally may symbolize the joy and confidence you aspire to feel, and looking at her can immediately bring forward those positive feelings for you.

Really take your time and be intentional about the images and quotes you pick. Make sure that looking at them will make you feel good and motivated to put in the work and create that life for yourself. I have more quote and phrase inspirations for your board in my free Vision Board Starter Kit.

I used Pinterest and Canva to create my digital vision boards, but you can also do it via Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or even just using Microsoft Word and place the images together.

Here’s my vision board & desktop at the moment. I also have a mood board on Pinterest solely on creating the emotions that I want to feel when living my ideal dream life.

STEP 3: LOOK AT YOUR BOARD DAILY

Yep, you read it right – EVERY DAY. In order to really create and manifest that life into reality, you must remind yourself of what you want every. single. day.

Hang your board in your bedroom, in your office, or for digital boards – set it as your desktop on the computer. Make it a habit to look at it every day. Read out the quotes you placed on the board. Look at the pictures, feel the emotions and thoughts you want to have and really visualize yourself vividly living that dream life.

All results first start from your thoughts.

You can choose what you want to think and focus on. Your thoughts create your feelings. Your feelings then drive your actions. And your actions create your results.

There’s really no magic formula about this visualization exercise. But if you consistently follow through every day and develop strong clarity about what you want, the process itself will feel magical. You can take actions to achieve the results & live your dream life. I can promise you that.
